Commenting on the UK government announcement that electrification will be extended into Wales, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly, Nick Bourne AM, said:
“Today’s announcement is extremely welcome and follows the hard work of the Welsh Conservatives in lobbying the UK coalition government on this issue.
“We have always supported rail electrification extending into Wales and have worked closely with the Secretary of State in arguing this case.
“Labour failed to electrify even one centimetre of railway track in Wales during their 13 years in power. Finally, under the current UK government, a fully costed announcement of development has been made.
“A further extension of possible electrification to Valley Lines Services also provides an important boost to many communities across South Wales.”
Shadow Minister for Transport, Darren Millar AM, said: “The Transport Secretary’s statement includes an assurance that the business case for extending to Swansea will be constantly under review. A Welsh Conservative administration in Wales would work closely with the UK government to develop this business case.
“The benefits of electrification include the reduction of carbon emissions, lower running costs, improved journey times and economic benefits.
“Today’s announcement is excellent news for Wales.”
