Bourne: Assembly Government failing young people

Welsh Conservatives have criticised the Assembly Government’s commitment to education, employment and training opportunities for young people.

Speaking in the Assembly Chamber, Leader of the Opposition Nick Bourne AM challenged the Assembly Government over its failure to support young people across Wales.

Commenting on the exchange, Mr Bourne said:

“Even before the recession, the unemployment rate for 15-19 year olds in Wales was the highest of any Organisation for Economic Cooperation & Development country and the Assembly Government has failed to rectify the situation.

“I am also deeply concerned that the recommendations of a review into education funding are yet to be published, despite the Education Minister telling us that these would be released by the end of March.

“The First Minister claims that the publication is imminent but he is unwilling to commit to a date and this is simply not good enough.

“The Assembly Government is failing young people across the board and First Minister’s attitude towards both these matters is indicative of his and the Assembly Government’s complacency towards tackling the problems facing young people.

“Yet again, Wales is lagging behind and First Minister’s response is typical of the Assembly Government’s poverty of ambition for Wales.”
