Bourne & Ramsay: Chancellor confirms Wales flexibility over cuts

Commenting on this morning’s announcement by the Chancellor George Osborne that devolved institutions will be given the opportunity to put off cuts intended to cut the UK’s deficit for a year, Leader of the Opposition Nick Bourne AM said:

“I massively welcome today’s confirmation that the Assembly Government will be given the option to defer spending cuts for a year.

“The commitment from the Treasury team gives Wales flexible control over any cuts, as we promised before the election, and is contrary to Plaid Cymru and Labour claims that Wales would be ignored by a Conservative Government.

“It is now in the hands of the Assembly Government and up to them to indicate whether they will be accepting this offer.”

Shadow Finance Minister Nick Ramsay AM added:

“The Chancellor has stayed true to his word, in spite of Plaid and Labour claims that he would not, and the Assembly Government now has the chance to decide when savings should be made in Wales.”
