A lucky young cyclist from Brecon has been rewarded by the Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust (BHIT) for being safety conscious!
Thomas Gilbert, aged four, was one of 30,000 school children from across England and Wales who was identified as a young person dressed correctly with a helmet when cycling and given a goody pack. The packs were handed out by PCSO’s, BHIT volunteers and Road Safety Officers working in England and Wales.
But it didn’t end there – Thomas’ name was also placed into Helmet Watch Scheme national draw to win a Storm Hawks toy game. Fortunately for him, Reading and Wales International striker Simon Church pulled Thomas’s name out of the hat at the Grand Prize Draw.
Thomas was given his prize during assembly at Llanfaes School in front of all his classmates.
The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust was founded in 1998 by Angela Lee, a paediatric nurse – and is a registered charity committed to reducing the number of children who are killed and seriously injured every year in cycling accidents in the UK.
The scheme rewards children under 15 years-old who are seen wearing a cycle helmet. Brecon PCSO Bryony Hope said: ‘This is an excellent initiative which reinforces the importance of wearing a helmet while riding your bike. During their regular patrols our Neighbourhood Management Officers ensured that when they spotted a child wearing their helmet they were handed a goody bag. So in the interest of safety, I urge children to continue to cycle wearing their helmets – don’t get caught without one!’
