Brewing Up Support for a Good Cause

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Keith Hyde, is holding a special coffee morning next week to raise funds for a cancer charity.

As part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning initiative, the Lord Mayor is inviting Cardiff Council staff to join him and new Chief Executive Jon House for a cuppa at County Hall on Tuesday September 21 from 9.30am to noon to raise money for the good cause.

Local businesses such as Debenhams’ Cardiff store and Memory Lane have donated cakes to the event while Argies Coffee of Bridgend will provide the coffee, tea and sugar. Gift vouchers have been donated to the coffee morning by Morrisons in Cardiff Bay, Waitrose in Pontprennau, Sainsbury’s, John Lewis and Tesco stores in Pengam Green and Canton.

The Hilton Hotel has pledged an overnight stay for two to the event while The Vale Hotel and Spa has donated a £50 voucher. Tickets for a family of four to this year’s pantomime at the New Theatre, a £25 voucher for St David’s Hall, a meal for two up to the value of £30 at the Empire Restaurant, Albany Road and a meal for two to the value of £20 at the Mirchi Restaurant, City Road plus a whole host of other prizes will also be up for grabs for council staff who pop along for a tea or coffee and buy a raffle ticket.

Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning has grown year on year since the first event in 1991 when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Last year’s coffee morning hosts helped raise £7.9m for people living with cancer, with 43,000 people holding a coffee morning.

Over £60m has been donated over the years and this year, the charity is appealing for help to raise over £8m to help change the lives of people affected by cancer.

The Lord Mayor, Cllr Keith Hyde, said: “Macmillan Cancer Support does a superb job in supporting those families and individuals who are affected by cancer and I am sure we all know someone who has been touched by the illness in some way.

“I’m delighted to be hosting a coffee morning as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning initiative and I hope staff from across the Council will be able to spare some time to come along for a cup of coffee, meet some friends and to donate to this very worthwhile cause.”
