A popular Bridgend pub has shown its support for the Welsh Guards in Afghanistan by raising more than £8,000.
The bulk of the money was raised at a charity event, which was in memory of local man Dane Elson who lost his life in Afghanistan in July. Mark Power, manager of the Ty Risha said: “Dane’s family and friends still drink in the pub. We all wanted to do something to celebrate his life and show how much we all thought of him. The money raised was in his honour and will go to the Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal.
“Thanks must go to Dane’s sister Rowenna, who put so much time and effort into organising the event, and to all our customers who gave so generously.”
The event auction – which included prizes of a holiday in Ireland, tickets to a West End show and a signed rugby shirt – attracted high bids. Profits from food, entry and raffle ticket sales also boosted the fundraising amount. More money still was raised on the day of the event when friends and family of Dane – including Rowenna Elson, Carl Fricker, Julian Fricker, Kelly Payne, Kate Porter and Tony Tucker – held a sponsored parachute jump.
