Bryniago pupils join the school meals crew

Children at Swansea’s YGG Bryniago will be sitting down at the Captain’s table on Thursday (November 25).

The youngsters will be getting a visit from Captain Jack the Swansea pirate as he continues with his campaign to encourage more primary-aged children to join the crew of youngsters tucking into a healthy, tasty school dinner at lunch time.

The school will be holding a taster day from 10am until 11.30. The aim is for children who don’t normally try school meals to get a taste of what’s on offer.

Bet Jenkins from Swansea Council is in charge of the dedicated team who prepare and serve meals at Swansea’s schools.

She said: “The children have really enjoyed the taster days. Many of them have been dressing up as pirates to be part of Captain Jack’s crew and more importantly they have enjoyed the food on offer – even those who haven’t really experienced school meals before.

“The feedback has been useful for us. We know what’s popular with the children and this helps us shape our menus.”

A new website is also going live this week where children and their parents can find out more about what’s on the menu at their local school.

The website will be found at www.swansea.gov.uk/schoolmeals and features a treasure hunt for pirate pizza. Castell Howell Food Service has donated a brand new bike for the lucky winner who will be drawn before the end of term.

The website features information and fun activities for children as well as a section for their parents and carers to find out more about healthy eating and what’s on the menu.
