Buddhist Monk from Nepal visits local stupa near Criccieth

Khenpo Namgyal, a Bhutanese Buddhist monk and senior teacher from Lekshey Ling monastery in Nepal will be visiting the Criccieth area in April. He is being hosted by Lama Shenpen, a local Buddhist teacher who has established a sacred place and retreat centre called “the Hermitage” near Criccieth.

Last October at the Hermitage four monks from Lekshey Ling monastery presided over the final building and consecration of a Buddhist monument called a stupa, performing rituals dating back over two thousand years. A stupa is filled with prayers and many sacred substances and acts as a focus of spiritual energy, benefitting all who come within its sphere of influence. Khenpo Namgyal assisted with gathering together the sacred contents of the stupa from different regions of Nepal.

Lama Shenpen, who held the vision for the stupa project says “it is my hope that the Hermitage can provide a resource for the area, a peaceful place of deep spiritual practice for local people to link into, both now and in the future “. Lama Shenpen trained for over 40 years in Tibetan Buddhism both in India and in her native Britain and spent many years in retreat. Fluent in Tibetan she is able to focus on the essence of the Tibetan Buddhist teachings making them accessible and inspiring for a contemporary western society.

Coinciding with the visit of Khenpo Namgyal the Hermitage will be organising an open day on Saturday 14th April from 10 am till 5pm. The day will be a chance for local people to visit the Hermitage, meet Lama Shenpen and Khenpo Namgyal and hear teachings on the theme of love and compassion. A vegetarian lunch will be provided and there is a suggested donation of £25 for the day. To book and for more information please contact
