Swansea’s newest city centre shopping complex and a school rebuilt after an arson attack are among a shortlist of developments up for prestigious awards.
The former David Evans site and Penyrheol Comprehensive School will be up against a wide ranging list of buildings and developments shortlisted for this year’s Building Excellence Awards.
The annual awards are organised by Swansea Council and help celebrate good building practice. They also look to recognise where builders or contractors have gone the extra mile to ensure that a project is constructed to a high standard.
TV presenter and broadcaster Sarra Elgan will be the host for the evening at the Liberty Stadium on February 19.
This year, a total of 32 schemes have been shortlisted and they include everything from small domestic house extensions to large commercial developments.
Other schemes include St Thomas Lofts & Mews (formerly St Thomas School), YGG Lwynderw and Gorseinon Hospital.
Cllr John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “I welcome these awards as a way of maintaining and improving on the success we have enjoyed so far. They have been designed to highlight a vital but largely unsung area of the modern construction industry.
“Swansea Council is one of the leading providers in Wales of building control services both in the city and in other parts of the country. It plays an important role in ensuring any new buildings comply with the latest regulations so that people who use them know they are safe.”
Peter Richards, Principal Building Control Officer, said: “Swansea is a vibrant, growing 21st century city. We can all see the developments going on around us and it’s good to know that the work of our building control team ensures that the building standards are extremely high.
“The importance of full compliance with building regulations cannot be underestimated in terms of future quality of buildings in Swansea.”
