Eleanor Burnham AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minster for Older People has praised the work of Age Cymru in evaluating the age-friendliness of local communities.
The assessment tool, called the Community Calculator, was unveiled in the Assembly at the Cross-Party Group on Older People and Ageing.
Eleanor, who is Chair of the Group, said: “I am extremely grateful to Age Cymru for producing this excellent document which highlights the difficulties being faced by older people in Wales on a daily basis.
“The Community Calculator proves that a great deal more needs to be done to make improvements in all of the specified elements it measured. From public toilets to pavements and public seating, the evidence shows that older people are often getting a raw deal.
“The document provides us with major benchmarks for the future and I am privileged to have been part of its launch.
“I congratulate Age Cymru on a job very well done and look forward to future results.”
Graeme Francis, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Age Cymru said:
“Age Cymru is delighted to receive cross party support for the results of our Community Calculator Campaign. The report highlights how important it is that decision makers across Wales take seriously the importance of making every community age friendly.”
“Age Cymru acknowledges the current economic challenges and pressures on public spending. However we also believe that this challenging time can be used as an opportunity to look at how services and facilities are delivered in local areas to make sure that all communities in Wales are suitable for older people.”
