Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, Eleanor Burnham has welcomed the progress of the latest stage of Assembly legislation on children’s rights. Stage 3 of the Proposed Rights of Children and Young People (Wales) Measure was voted through the Assembly on Tuesday.
Ms Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly spokesperson for children and young people said:
“This is an extremely important piece of legislation as, once it is passed, Wales will be the first country in the UK to enshrine children’s rights into law via a devolved political assembly.
“It is crucial that we get this right, and whilst I am pleased at the collective amendments already made to the original proposal, I am disappointed that the Labour-Plaid government didn’t support our attempts to make this even more robust.
“This piece of work is about making sure that the voices of children and young people are not only listened to but heard.
“The Deputy Minister for Children and his colleagues must now make sure that passing legislation enshrining children’s rights into law in Wales does not become a mere tick-box exercise but a significant and powerful way of making a real difference to the lives of our children and young people.
