Burns: Complex and confusing school banding

Responding to the Welsh Labour Government’s publication of new bandings for secondary schools, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:

“While accessible information on standards in our schools has the potential to be a valuable tool for parents, the Minister’s current plans are not comprehensive and rank schools partly based on factors totally out of their control.

“I fear the complex new banding system could cause confusion for parents and negatively impact on staff morale even in academically well-performing schools.

“The Minister should engage closely with the views of teachers, parents and students to assess feedback on the new banding system to establish whether this is a positive addition to the data already publicly available.”
