Welsh police attended nearly 3000 violent incidents in schools over the last four years.
According to figures obtained by the Welsh Conservatives, officers from all four police forces responded to 2,862 cases in total.
These included reports of sexual offences, robbery and racially aggravated assault.
There were 471 separate reports between January and the beginning of December 2010.
646 incidents were attended by police during 2009, 797 in 2008 and 948 during 2007.
Shadow Minister for Education, Angela Burns AM, said: “Violence in schools is an incredibly serious issue on a number of levels.
“While it is obviously of great concern to pupils and their families, it also has a very detrimental impact on efforts to create a safe learning environment.
“Along with teaching staff, our children have every right to feel safe within their school surroundings.
“On average, every school day – somewhere in Wales – police will be called to a violent incident within a school. That’s not good enough and parents have every right to show their concern.
“While I welcome a decrease in these figures, the Welsh Labour Government still has much work to do to stamp out the problem and boost safety.
“The Minister must prioritise the problem, work closely with schools and make sure their close co-operation with the police is continued and developed.”
