Commenting on figures published today showing the average graduate debt owed to the Student Loans Company stands at £13,650, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:
“Due to rising living costs, it is increasingly routine for graduates to leave university with considerable debts owed to the Student Loans Company.
“Given the monetary pressures on young people, there is a growing case for financial education in schools to teach young people about financial awareness and managing debt.
“Young people are not untouched by challenging economic times and would benefit from enhancing their understanding of the issues affecting personal and household finances.
“I hope the Education Minister will discuss with teachers the merits of improving opportunities in schools for young people to study such a crucial life skill as financial management, which could be of considerable benefit in later life.”
