Assembly Government progress in meeting climate change and waste reduction targets are nowhere near being met, Shadow Environment Minister Angela Burns said today.
Speaking in an Assembly debate today on biodiversity and the natural environment, the Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire AM criticised the lack of political leadership.
Mrs Burns said:
“We have ambitious targets – quite rightly as this is such an important matter. But we do not have the actions in place to achieve these aims.
“We must now work towards making some progress and putting this at the forefront of our priorities in protecting the natural environment.
“Investing in the renewal of our natural environment has the potential to create jobs, enhance our skill base, and provide much needed support for businesses, all aimed at supporting a sustainable, competitive Welsh economy.
“Protecting biodiversity should have political ownership and leadership.
“While the targets set have government ownership we need to be working cross-party to ensure biodiversity remains a high priority in government and in society as a whole.”
