Commenting on the publication of ‘The Cwricwlwm Cymreig, history and the story of Wales’, which makes recommendations for the future of history teaching in schools in Wales, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:
“Learning from the past is the best way for our decision-makers and innovators of tomorrow to avoid repeating mistakes in the future.
“Learning about history helps our understanding of many of the events, crises and disputes in the world today and informs discussions about solutions and pitfalls.
“While there is scope to improve the teaching of Welsh history in schools, the subject must remain outward-looking so young people are properly equipped to compete in the global race.
“We must understand the context in which we operate and history plays a vital role in providing that.
“I hope Welsh Labour Ministers will consider these recommendations, but avoid the temptation to make history teaching insular, because we must prepare young people for the challenges of the global economy.”
