Commenting on reports of a re-announcement from Labour Ministers of investment in school buildings over a seven year period, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:
“This is a crude re-announcement of modest investment of £100million a year from the Welsh Government in school buildings, which is not enough to make up for the previous 15 years of Labour neglect.
“This cash has been repackaged for a cynical relaunch just days before the European elections, ahead of which Labour is scratching around looking for some rehashed good news after its class warfare-based election campaign bombed.
“This is the eighth time in recent days that Labour has appeared to take advantage of its position in government to manipulate the news agenda and use taxpayers’ money to rally its core vote.
“The 21st century schools programme has already been slashed by Labour, with Welsh Government funding cut to just 50% with local authorities expected to cough up the rest and having been stretched out to seven years.
“Re-launching a policy originally announced in 2011 and packaging it to exaggerate Labour funding during an election campaign is the height of cynicism and Labour Ministers should stop trying to pull the wool over voters’ eyes.”
