Commenting on the launch of the Welsh Labour Government’s new ten year skills strategy, the Skills Implementation Plan, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:
“While these warm words from Labour about key skills are very welcome, the reality is that Wales is falling behind in the global race because of Labour’s managed decline of education standards.
“Under Labour, performance in literacy, numeracy and science in Wales is falling behind other developed nations, while the study of modern foreign languages, sciences and engineering is in decline, despite rises in other parts of the UK.
“To compete in an increasingly international jobs market, young people in Wales must have the skills which are most highly sought-after by employers and co-operation between the Welsh Government, industry and education providers, including FE colleges, is vital.
“There are fears in the education sector that Labour’s recent meddling in qualifications could further undermine confidence in Welsh skills and make it more difficult for young people to compete in the global jobs market.”
