Burry Port lifeboat‘s busy Sunday afternoon

At 5:45 pm on Sunday 3 July 2011 the volunteers at the RNLI’s station at Burry Port launched to a report of two people on the sandbank between Burry Port and Llanelli.

The two, originally from Poland but now living in Llanelli, had been seen from shore and were in imminent danger of being cut off by the incoming tide. The informant had called Swansea Coastguards who the requested the launch of Burry Port lifeboat. Due to the tidal conditions and the shallow water in the Llanelli area the IB1 TheYoung Watsons was launched.

When the lifeboat arrived at the bank one had already tried to return ashore but had turned back due to the depth of water. The two were taken on board the lifeboat and back to Llanelli beach into the care of Burry Port Coastguard mobile unit.

On its way back to Burry Port the lifeboat was informed that there were four people on the sandbank between Burry Port and Pembrey harbours. The lifeboat went to investigate and discovered that there were ten people on the bank all unable to make their way ashore due to the deep fast flowing water. The lifeboat ferried the ten, visitors to the area, safely ashore.

The Young Watsons was crewed by Justin Pugh, Lee Howells and Darren Caines.
