Business As Usual In Pontypridd

Its business as usual on Church Street, Pontypridd as the regeneration works continue to spread throughout the town centre.

Work has now commenced on the fourth phase of the Pontypridd Regeneration Project. The work is supported with a closure order for traffic along Church Street, which links Market Street and Gelliwastad Road, but the street remains open to pedestrians, and businesses are open and trading as usual.

Church Street is the fourth area to benefit from new granite paving, quality street furniture, signage and lighting. Currently similar work is also being undertaken along Mill Street and sections of High Street and Taff Street.

As Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s contractor Costain push ahead with the streetscape improvements that form an integral part of the £10.5million regeneration scheme for Pontypridd town centre, businesses in Church Street continue to offer their many varied services to the public.

Peter Lovegrove who is a partner at the Hair Centre in Church Street said, “I am pleased to see the work has started in Church Street and as a business representative acknowledge there will inevitably be some disruption.

“That said, we have had an early and positive meeting with the Council and Costain who have taken on board some of our concerns and the foundation for good ongoing communications has been established. I would like to stress that it is business as usual and would encourage the public and regular customers to keep using the street while the work is ongoing.”

The businesses in Church Street will keep in regular contact with Costain for updates on how the work is progressing. Shoppers and visitors to Pontypridd are being reminded of the many first-class shops and services available in Church Street, and new banners will be placed at each end of the thoroughfare to encourage more people to visit them.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care & Emergency Planning Cllr Andrew Morgan explained: “We are grateful to the businesses throughout Pontypridd for their continued support, patience and understanding during the programme of works which inevitably will cause some disruption although we continue to do all in our power to minimise this.”

Brian Greaves, Community Relations Manager for Costain who are undertaking the street works added, “The public will see that work is well underway in Pontypridd on four fronts and we are doing our very best to work with the businesses in the town and other key stakeholders to ensure the work is carried out with the least possible disruption. The first area of granite paving can already be seen in Mill Street giving an indication of how impressive the completed scheme will be.’

The £10.5M Pontypridd Town Centre Regeneration project is taking place following the Council securing financial support from the Welsh Assembly Government through the European Regional Development Fund and Targeted Match Funding, alongside Council and private sector contributions.
