Commenting on today’s figures which reveal that Wales has the second lowest rate of business start-ups in the UK, Shadow Minister for the Economy David Melding AM said:
“It is deeply depressing that we remain near the bottom of the UK league table. The Assembly Government needs to use these figures as one of the key measures of the health of the economy.
“In past recessions it has been the rate of enterprise births during the recovery that marks out the most successful regions and nations.
“There is a real danger that Wales will only secure slow and unsteady growth unless we do more to encourage entrepreneurship.
“Coupled with the worst unemployment rate of any UK nation, a widening wealth gap with the rest of the UK, and high economic inactivity, the state of the Welsh economy remains fragile.”
