Councillors and staff from Powys County Council are being encouraged to use buses to get to official meetings as part of a 12-month pilot scheme.
The trial, which will be launched on January 4, aims to cut costs by reducing business mileage and improving the council’s carbon footprint.
Board Member for Public Transport, Councillor Gwilym Evans said: “The trial scheme, which will be open to all staff and elected members during working hours, will help promote the use of public transport and reduce the amount of business miles travelled on behalf of the council.
“Staff will be allowed to use contracted bus services, which are already funded by the council, free of charge on production of their photo ID staff card. They will not be allowed to use the scheme for commuting to and from work.
“The trial will operate on buses that are already funded by the council so there will be no extra cost to the council but will cut the cost of business mileage. Staff are being advised to plan their journeys in advance.
“We are asking staff to record all the journeys they make during the coming year and this information will be used to evaluate the success of the pilot scheme and the possibility of it being made permanent,” he added.
