Businesses and residents unite to tackle anti-social behaviour

Local businesses and residents in a Conwy village have joined forces with North Wales Police to help deter anti social behaviour.

People in Pensarn near Abergele are using their local knowledge and are working closely with members of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team to help tackle anti social behaviour by identifying ‘hot spot’ areas.

PCSO Sally Mulvaney from the Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are utilising various steps to try and prevent anti social behaviour. Action plans are in place to target specific areas and tackle any problems that may occur.

“We have also recently set up an early warning network throughout the community, which consists of key players such as residents, licensees and councillors, who act as the eyes and ears for ourselves and alert us to any potential anti social issues so we can act swiftly”.

One business in particular which have been leading the way in putting a stop to this behaviour in the community is the ‘Harts Caravan Park’.

The business was concerned about a section of land close to their Park which had been developed into a community wildlife garden by PeBel (Pensarn and Belgrano Residents Association).

PCSO Mulvaney added: “There was some evidence that youths were congregating and drinking alcohol in the area surrounding Tennis Court Road and as a result CCTV was installed by the caravan park – not only to protect their own property but to also help police identify and catch offenders.

“The problems we were having weren’t widespread but there were isolated incidents of youths gathering and drinking in the area. A number of bird feeders were stolen from the garden and there were incidents of people allowing their dogs to foul in the area.”

As a result of the information received, local residents were asked to log all incidents of anti social behaviour and police patrols were also stepped up.

Community Beat Manager Sharon Thorogood said: “It is encouraging to see local businesses and residents joining forces with the Police to help put a full stop to any antisocial behaviour in the area.

“Harts Caravan Park must be commended for their community spirit and willingness to help the Police stamp this out. Pensarn is lucky to have very few instances of anti social behaviour and hopefully, with the help of local residents, it will stay this way in the future.”
