Businesses encouraged to ‘get digital’

A breakfast event to showcase how business and universities can work together to support the growing digital economy in Wales will take place from 8.30am until 10.30am, on Tuesday, November 30, at the Village Hotel, Swansea.

The ‘Let’s Get Digital’ event, organised by Knowledge Exchange Wales (KEW), a collaboration between Swansea and Bangor Universities, will demonstrate current developments and future advancements within the digital economy and highlight potential collaboration between academia and industry in South Wales.

Key speakers include Dr Elina Vartiainen, Senior Researcher in User Experience from the Nokia Research Centre, Helsinki, who will demonstrate the benefits of new interactive technologies to business.

Professor Min Chen from the Department of Computer Science at Swansea University will outline how current and future ICT research could help Welsh business.

Dr Neal Harman from Software Alliance Wales – the recently-launched £13million pan-Wales project led by Swansea University – will discuss Innovation and Growth in the ICT and Software Sector.

And Mahesha Pandit from the Digital Systems Knowledge Transfer Network will provide an overview of a dynamic new area called Cloud Computing.

Speaker Dr Elina Vartiainen said: “KEW is a great forum for bringing local businesses and ICT research together. By sharing ideas, businesses can find new solutions to improve their work practices and research can get practical feedback for their future work.”

Ceri Jones, Director of KEW and Deputy Head of Swansea University’s Department of Research and Innovation, said: “As part of a new Welsh Assembly Government initiative, leading business professionals and ICT experts have been appointed to serve on the new Digital Wales Advisory Board in order to address all aspects of the digital economy within Wales. It is no wonder that there is synergy between academics and businesses to exploit this area.

“Digital technologies represent enormous potential for the Welsh economy. This event will bring together leading academics, local entrepreneurs and small businesses to explore how collaborative R&D can generate new products and create more jobs to support the knowledge economy in Wales.”
