Hundreds of city businesses are being urged to take a leaf out of local residents’ books and take up the chance to recycle plastic waste.
Tens of thousands of families across Swansea have been doing their bit every pink week by putting out plastics for recycling.
Now businesses are getting the chance to do the same and cut their waste management costs at the same time.
Almost 1,800 local businesses using the Council’s commercial waste service are already recycling part of their waste.
But now they and other organisations across the city are being contacted about the new collection service and Council recycling officers are hopeful the plastics scheme will have a positive effect on Swansea’s overall recycling rate.
Nick Romanello from Gorseinon Fish Bar Roma 2000, is hoping to encourage more businesses in Swansea to recycle some of the waste they produce commercially.
Nick said: “Given the industry we’re in, it’s important that we do our bit and recycle. It’s pretty easy and really doesn’t take much effort. You have to put your rubbish out anyway so why not try and recycle some.
“Because we’re a business we tend to get a lot of packaging with the goods we buy in. Local businesses can really help increase the amount of waste we recycle.”
Trish Flint. Swansea Council’s Commercial Waste Recycling Officer, said: “The majority of householders now take recycling in their stride and understand the importance of taking part.
“Businesses across the county are also waking up to the fact that not only is recycling good for the environment it also makes good business sense.
“They will know that recycling waste is almost always cheaper than sending it to landfill and on top of that their customers are increasingly wanting to deal with organisations that have good green credentials,” she said.
“We’re confident that the introduction of plastic recycling will boost the city’s recycling rate even further and encourage more local businesses to come on board.”
