Bute Park Opening Hours Extended for the Winter

Following a successful three month trial, the opening hours for cyclists at Bute Park will be extended for the reminder of the winter.

The trial was introduced following a request from the Cardiff Cycling Campaign to extend the opening hours of Bute Park for cycling commuters.

In October a three month trial begun with the park closing at 7pm in order to enable cyclists and commuter to access the west side of the city, via the Millennium Bridge.

The trial has now been extended for the reminder of the winter allowing commuters to continue walking and cycling through the park until 7pm during the winter months.

The two entrances with extended hours are the gate at the Millennium Bridge, which links Sophia Gardens to Bute Park and the gate near the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. All other access gates will follow the normal closing times.

It is also important that cyclists using the route during the trial have their front and rear bike lights switched on as they ride through the park to maximise visibility.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “We have received some very positive feedback from the trail. The last three months has proved there is a high demand for Bute Park to be opened until 7pm.

“Many commuters have already taken advantage of the extended open hours and I’m delighted to say that we will be extending the opening hours for the reminder of the winter, giving both cyclists and walkers the opportunity to travel through this magnificent park.”
