Cabinet choose Waterfront designers

Conwy’s Cabinet Members have given their seal of approval to K2 Architects to design the building, finishes and features for the Watersports Hotspot on Colwyn Bay promenade as part of the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project.

A design competition was held for a Watersports Hotspot on Colwyn Bay Promenade.  Six designs were shortlisted and they were put on display for the public to comment on their favourites.

The evaluation process identified the top two entries, which achieved identical scores.  These two entries were substantially different in overall concept, but both met the projects requirements and both scored well in the public consultation.

Representatives from the two top scoring designers gave presentations to Conwy’s Cabinet on 2nd February.  Cabinet voted for the proposal put forward by K2 Architects and selected their idea as the Design Competition Winner.

Cllr Dilwyn Roberts, Council Leader said, “I’d like to thank all the design companies that took part in the competition, the standard was very high.  I’m delighted to congratulate K2 on their success and look forward to working with them to make a bright, attractive and interesting seafront for Colwyn Bay that everyone can enjoy.”

The Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government with match funding provided by the European Regional Development Fund.

K2 Architects will now be awarded the contract to develop their idea into a full design for the Watersports Hotspot, to be built after the first phase of the coastal defence works are completed later this year.  In developing the idea, Conwy County Borough Council will hold further consultation events to allow the public to have their say on the proposals.

Conwy County Borough Council would like to thank the public, stakeholders and community groups who took the time to get involved with the consultation.

There will be more opportunities to get involved as the project develops.
