Cadets dig in to help tackle carbon emissions

Gwent and Powys Army Cadets joined forces with Newport in Bloom to help make Newport a greener city.

Cadets around the country are celebrating the movement’s 150th anniversary and a tree planting project is one of the ways they are marking the landmark year.

Newport in Bloom has also embarked on a major tree planting scheme to offset carbon emissions from the council’s vehicles.

It was awarded a grant from the landfill project to plant thousands of trees across the city for the carbon offset project.

On Saturday, the two organisations came together to plant trees at Tredegar House and Gaer Fort.

During the weekend, more than 3,000 trees were planted by cadets across Wales.

Newport has won its category in the Wales in Bloom competition many times and took the title again last year. It also won a top award in Britain in Bloom 2009.
