A multi million pound project to build a new primary school in Caernarfon, to open in the spring of 2012, is on target.
The £9.3 million new Ysgol yr Hendre, promises to be one of the most environmentally friendly schools in the UK, as well as providing a first rate education and community resources for generations of Caernarfon children and their families.
The new school, situated at Cae Phillips across the road from the current school building, is being built by innovative energy efficient techniques.
This construction method means that the building keeps warm in the winter and cool in the summer, reducing heating costs and leads to a 60% reduction in carbon emissions during the building’s lifetime. This building process is also more effective resulting in less waste.
Councillor Liz Saville Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Education Portfolio Leader, said:
“I am delighted to see so much progress being made and that the school is already taking shape, this is an exciting time for Caernarfon and the whole county.
“The green credentials of the school speak for themselves – it is sustainable and will mean lower fuel bills and less carbon emissions in the long term. It will also provide pupils and their teachers with the learning and working environment that they deserve.
“The new Ysgol yr Hendre building is the most recent school building project as the Council strives to provide facilities which meet the demands of a 21st century curriculum.”
Councillor Roy Owen, Chair of Ysgol yr Hendre Governors, added:
“The whole community is looking forward to seeing the building work finished as it will be a real boost to the area.
“The school will also be a hub for the wider community as it will include facilities to provide adult education, health and social welfare initiatives as well as cultural and sporting activities.”
The Gwynedd Council built new school is a £9.3 million project, part funded by a £4.3 million Strategic Capital Investment Framework grant from the Welsh Assembly Government. The building work is being carried out by Wynne Construction.
