Customers at Caernarfon’s Morrisons supermarket picked up more than their weekly groceries when they visited the store last Friday, after North Wales Police and the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended with advice regarding Halloween and Bonfire Night safety.
As part of Operation Be a Nice Guy (B.A.N.G), an all Wales joint initiative which is aimed at reducing incidents of anti social behaviour, the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service brought along their Fire Community Safety bus – where leaflets and posters promoting Halloween and Bonfire / Firework safety were distributed.
PCSO Annette Jones, who is from the Caernarfon Neighbourhood Policing Team attended the day with her colleague, PCSO Janice Kane. She said: “Our visit to the store last week provided people with an ideal opportunity to speak to us and our colleagues from the Fire and Rescue Service about keeping safe over the Halloween and Bonfire period.
“During our visit, we distributed our Halloween Trick or Treat posters, bookmarks and Firework leaflets. We also gave out stickers with details on how to contact the police in a non emergency and spoke to people about their concerns.
She added: “I regularly visit the store with crime prevention advice and I would like to thank Morrisons for their continued support.”
Over the last few weeks officers from both services as well as Community Safety Partnerships have been taking a proactive approach by distributing information leaflets and posters throughout the communities. School Community Police Officers have talked to pupils during lessons and neighbourhood policing teams have visited various Youths Clubs and Day Centre’s to talk to youngsters and the elderly.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service also currently have a firework colouring competition for schools and children under seven, which can be downloaded from the Service’s website. The closing date is the 5th November.
Gareth Griffiths, Senior Fire Safety Manager, said: “We want to support any organised bonfire and firework display which North Wales Fire and Rescue Service or North Wales Police are involved with, as these are safest way to enjoy bonfire celebrations.
“We urge everyone to attend an organised display as they are also a cheaper way to enjoy the evening. By helping to support these initiatives we are able to reach a lot of youngsters to get the safety messages about both Halloween and bonfire celebrations so that everyone in North Wales can enjoy a safe and happy time.”
If you have any concerns regarding Bonfire Night please contact a member of your local policing team by dialling 101.
