Figures released by Caerphilly county borough council reveal that the authority is taking a tough stance against parents who allow their children to skip school.
In the academic year 2009/10 the authority pursued court cases resulting in almost £14,000 in fines and costs against local parents.
“It’s important that children and young people receive the education they deserve,” said Cllr Phil Bevan, CCBC cabinet member for education. “We want to send out a clear message to a minority of parents that we will take action against persistent offenders who allow their children to have unauthorised absences from school.”
“We all have a duty to ensure that our pupils are educated to the highest degree and any absence from school can have an adverse affect on their development and progress,” he added.
The council strives to work with parents to address any problems that arise and all prosecution situations are dealt with individually on a case-by-case basis in close liaison with Education Welfare Officers. Prosecutions are taken as a very last resort.
