Caerphilly council gets top marks from residents

Residents across the Caerphilly county borough have given Caerphilly county borough council a big ‘thumbs up’ according to the findings of a major survey.

The council’s cabinet received a report on Tuesday (20th September) containing the results of a special Household Survey.

The Household Survey is a bi-annual questionnaire sent to 10,000 homes from all sections of the community to gather feedback on the council and its services.

The findings have now been analysed and the feedback has been very positive across a range of subject areas. The key headings that generated satisfaction include leisure, learning, cultural activities, local town centres, bus services and the council’s residents newsletter – Newsline.

The headline statistic was that 78% of respondents were satisfied with the overall service provided by the Council – which is higher than our target of 65%.

Cllr Allan Pritchard, leader of council said, “We are delighted with the positive feedback received from local residents and I would like to thank everyone who took part in our survey for their contributions. The council has many targets and objectives, so it is important that we listen to local people and set priorities in order to measure our success and track progress. The last two years have seen the sharpest rise in all of the previous household satisfaction surveys undertaken to date and indicates that we are addressing the views expressed to us by residents throughout our county borough.”

Key findings include:

  • 78% of respondents were satisfied with the overall service provided by the council, higher than the 2010-11 Improvement Plan target of 65%
  • Net satisfaction with the overall service provided by the Council increased from 44 in 2009 to 56 in 2011
  • There has been an improvement since 2009 in the proportion of respondents who feel the quality of life in their neighbourhood and local town centre has got better during the last 12 months
  • There were high levels of satisfaction with leisure, learning and cultural activities, particularly Llancaiach Fawr, the Winding House Museum and country parks
  • Dog fouling, the condition of pavements/walkways and litter/waste accumulation were the biggest problems that respondents felt affected the appearance of their streets.

The Household survey will feed into the authority’s Corporate Improvement Plan and help identify perceived areas of strength and weakness in the provision of council services.
