Caerphilly Local History Month is Underway

CaerphillyThere are plenty of ways for you to uncover your past in Caerphilly county borough during Local History Month, which runs throughout May.

Local historian David Mills will be giving a talk at the Winding House museum in New Tredegar about “The Brewer-Miller donations” on Saturday 17th May at 2.30pm. This illustrated talk will explore the vast catalogue of artwork made by Blackwood resident Mr EWT Llewellyn Brewer-Williams in the 1920s through to the 1940s. The museum will also be hosting its first ever ‘Museums at Night’ event on Thursday 15th May, inviting young detectives to play a game of ‘Gallery Guess Who’ as they explore the exhibitions by torchlight.  There are two sessions, starting at 5pm and 6pm. To book your free place call 01443 822 666.

Plus if you’ve never seen the historic winding engine in action your next chance is Saturday 31 May at 12pm.

Those wishing to delve into the past during Local History Month can drop into one of the county borough’s local libraries to get free access to ’Find My Past’ and ‘Ancestry.com’, providing a wealth of census returns, birth, death and marriage registers.  If you’re looking to dig a little deeper visit Bargoed Library, home of family history.  Staff are on hand to offer advice and support, call 01443 864 714 to make an appointment.
