Caerphilly parks service review could save £180,000

Savings in the region of £180,000 look set to be achieved as part of Caerphilly county borough council’s ongoing efforts to reduce costs and protect services.

A report out this week explains how the authority’s Parks and Outdoor Facilities Service could be reconfigured to provide a more streamlined management structure.

Cllr Allan Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Council and cabinet member responsible for human resources said, “The council is implementing a planned programme of efficiency measures to ensure the organisation is well placed to meet the financial challenges that lie ahead. This review is one of many that will take place across the authority to ensure we are fit for purpose and in a strong position to tackle the uncertain times that lie ahead.”

Caerphilly is better placed that many other local authority’s thanks to our careful strategic planning and we want to send out a clear message that we aim to cut costs, but protect services for our local communities,” he added.

The council’s Living Environment Scrutiny Committee will consider a report on 30th November which outlines how the Parks and Outdoor Facilities Service could see a reduction of seven posts, including two senior management posts and five supervisory / technical posts.

The service is responsible for looking after the parks, outdoor sports facilities and open spaces across the county borough and also includes the authority’s bereavement service. The proposed management restructure will result in improved service delivery and accountability by creating a greater focus on the needs of individual communities.

Some of the seven posts that are earmarked for deletion could be addressed by early retirement and the others will be subject to the council’s redeployment policy.

Following consideration by the Living Environment Scrutiny Committee, the report will then go before the council’s Cabinet for final approval in December.
