Staff and councillors at Caerphilly County Borough Council presented a cheque for £4,540 to the charity ‘Action on Elder Abuse’ on Monday 28th July.
In May staff and councillors took part in a series of fundraising events as part of ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’. Over 60 brave individuals abseiled 120 feet off Penallta Rock raising an impressive £2,774 between them. A cake sale with delicious homemade treats brought in over £300 and an amazing raffle with over 30 prices raised £973.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has supported ‘Action on Elder Abuse’ for several years. The charity provides help and support to those who have experienced abuse and ensures that they feel safe and protected. The charity also delivers specialist training to those who work with the elderly so that they become better equipped to identify abuse and learn how to deal with it effectively, as well as providing a free helpline for people to access confidential advice.
Cllr. Barbara Jones, Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council took part in the abseil with her daughter-in-law Susanne and granddaughter Lizzie. She said: “I am so pleased that we were able to raise such an amazing amount of money for an incredible charity. Staff worked enormously hard to make all the fundraising activities possible, and over 60 people braved the abseil, I’d like to say thank you to all of them. As well as raising important funds, hopefully we have also helped to highlight the issue of elder abuse and the charity ‘Action on Elder Abuse’ which does outstanding work in protecting some of the most venerable members of our society.”
Cllr. Robin Woodyatt, Cabinet Member for Social Services said: “I’m delighted that so many staff and councillors helped to raise important funds to assist the work of ‘Action on Elder Abuse’. It is vitally important that we continue to support this fantastic charity which makes a real difference to people’s lives. I’m proud that Caerphilly County Borough Council continues to make such huge efforts to protect venerable adults.”
