Caerphilly Shoppers set for an early Christmas present

Shoppers and businesses in town centres across the Caerphilly county borough could get an early Christmas present this week.

Caerphilly county borough council’s cabinet is set to consider a report proposing the introduction of 2 hour free parking in all pay and display car parks for two weeks in the run up to Christmas 2010.

Cllr Rob Gough, CCBC cabinet member for transportation and planning welcomed the idea, “We are keen to support the local economy and help boost trade in our town centres so this move could benefit businesses and shoppers alike.”

It is being proposed that free 2 hour parking is introduced at all pay and display car parks, rather than selected locations, as this will be easier to implement and is less confusing to motorists.

“We acknowledge the pressures facing traders due to the current economic climate, so we are keen to do everything we can to make our town centres attractive shopping destinations at this critical time of year,” added Cllr Gough.

During the Christmas period local car parks are full for the majority of the day and demand for parking is at its highest at this time of year. Free parking up to 2 hours (with no return for 2 hours), will ensure that there is turnover of car parking spaces and any motorist wishing to stay for longer than 2 hours will be required to pay the normal tariff (i.e. 3 hours and over).

If agreed, the free parking will commence on Tuesday 14th December until Thursday 28th December. The meeting of the council’s cabinet will take place at Penallta House council offices in Ystrad Mynach at 2pm on Tuesday 5th October.
