It has been announced this week that elite cyclists from across the world will speed through the streets of the Caerphilly county borough later this year when The Tour of Britain passes through the area.
One of stages of the event, which takes place across the UK between the 11th and 18th September, will see the cyclists race down the length of Wales from Welshpool to Caerphilly. The stage will feature the Brecon Beacons and Caerphilly Mountain within the final few kilometres of race.
“We are delighted with the news that this prestigious sporting event is coming to the Caerphilly county borough,” said CCBC Chief Executive Anthony O’Sullivan. “We hope the route will be lined with local people who can get the chance to cheer on some of the world’s top athletes as they travel through the area. Caerphilly town, with its magnificent medieval castle, will provide a fitting finale for the stage.”
“This announcement closely follows the recent news that Caerphilly has also been selected to host another prestigious event – the BBC Proms in the Park 2011. We have lots to offer here in the county borough and it is great that these major events are being used to showcase this area,” he added.
