The UK Government’s much-publicised boiler scrappage scheme won’t benefit a single household in Wales.
Hailed as “the UK’s first-ever boiler trade-in initiative” it has emerged that the scheme only applies to households in England.
Alun Cairns, the Welsh Conservatives’ Parliamentary candidate for the Vale of Glamorgan, today accused ministers of rationing access to energy efficiency improvements.
Mr Cairns said he has been contacted by members of the public expressing their anger at not being able to benefit from the scheme.
Alun Cairns AM said:
“This is a classic example of how Labour at Westminster and Labour in the Assembly cannot work together in the interests of Wales.
“This scheme was launched in a fanfare of publicity and many people were led to believe it applied right across the United Kingdom.
“The Assembly Government needs to make an urgent statement about how it intends to help Welsh householders who wrongly thought they would qualify for this scheme.
“At a time of rising fuel poverty, and with Wales in the grip of freezing temperatures, the Government appears to be rationing access to energy efficiency improvements.
“That’s why ministers in both London and Cardiff need to introduce ambitious energy efficiency schemes like our Green Deal and plan to fit homes with loft and cavity wall insulation.”
