Call for residents to help with city’s development

Residents have until the end of March 2011 to submit their ideas for how land could be used in Swansea in the future.

Swansea Council is developing the Local Development Plan (LDP) – a key document that will help shape Swansea from 2015 onwards.

Part of the process includes the opportunity for residents, landowners and developers to give their views on what land could potentially be used for. Further views and comments can then be submitted on any proposed land use.

Everything from retail space to parkland and social housing will be featured in the LDP. The LDP will replace the existing Unitary Development Plan (UDP) which was adopted by the Council in 2008.

In the last few weeks Council planners have been out and about in communities helping to explain the LDP to residents and businesses. The Council is hoping they will get involved in the nomination of candidate sites.

Cllr Gareth Sullivan, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Planning, said: “The Local Development Plan is a really important document which will provide us with guidance on how we develop Swansea in the future.

“We want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to say what they think land could be used for.

“Nominated sites won’t necessarily be included in the adopted LDP but we want people to have a role in the production of the document.”

The closing date for submission of Candidate Sites is March 31 this year. Views and comments can be submitted in relation to Candidate Sites until the end of May this year.
