Can do attitude to recycling breask record

070524_cbrown_mp_env_recyc_036Bridgend County Borough has smashed the Metal Miles world record for forming an unbroken line of recycled drinks cans.

The Home Nursing Federation of Singapore’s previous 2007 record of 90,769 cans was broken at 10pm on Thursday 26 November when volunteers laid down the last of 106,300 cans at Bridgend Recreation Centre – a winning margin of more than 15,000.

Organised by Bridgend County Borough Council and Bridge FM, residents and local school children have spent weeks collecting old drinks cans in preparation for the event. At the same time, they learned about the importance of recycling, sustainability and looking after the environment.

Council Leader Mel Nott said: “Congratulations to everyone who has helped to reclaim the Metal Miles world record for Bridgend County Borough. This has been a fantastic effort and a valuable lesson on the importance of recycling.

“Every year, the UK throws away £36,000,000 worth of aluminium, but the amount of energy saved from a single recycled aluminium can is enough to run a television for three hours.

“The average household gets through 208 cans a year, so if all the aluminium cans in the UK were recycled, there would be around 14 million fewer dustbins emptied into landfill sites.”

The latest Metal Miles event follows a previous record-breaking attempt by Bridgend County Borough in 2006 when an amazing three miles – that’s a total of 84,498 drinks cans – was lined up.

Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records are now verifying the latest record-breaking attempt.
