Caerphilly County Borough Council Trading Standards have continued to provide free child seat safety tests to motorists, ensuring their children are travelling safely.
A recent event at Morrisons Bargoed saw 40 free safety checks carried out. This was the first event of its type to take place at the new supermarket, which saw the majority of car seats require just minor adjustments such as tightening harnesses to provide greater support. No seats were condemned for being completely unsafe, however two were found to require major adjustments and one was found to be unsuitable for the car it was installed in.
Trading Standards officers were also able to offer advice to new parents purchasing car seats to ensure they buy a suitable seat that will protect their child while travelling. With a growing number of seats being purchased online, getting free expert advice on requirements and fitting is more important than ever before. Road safety officers were also on hand to provide practical advice on staying safe around roads and car parks.
Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community & Leisure Services said: “I am pleased that residents are continuing to take advantage of the free car seat safety checks provided by Caerphilly County Borough Council. These straightforward checks often identify minor adjustments that can be easily made on the spot, ensuring children are travelling safely. However on occasion they reveal more dangerous faults which could be critical if a serious accident were to occur. I’d encourage everybody to get their child seat checked, and to seek proper advice before purchasing a car seat.”
