Car stolen as owner clears ice from windscreen

As the temperatures drop once again, police are warning the public not to leave their engines running and vehicles unattended when clearing ice from windscreens.

The warning follows the theft of another car, this time in the Clos Cwm Golau area of Merthyr during the early hours of this morning (6.45am, December 14).

A red Vauxhall Corsa was stolen from a driveway, as its 27-year-old male owner momentarily returned into his house to wait for frost to clear from the windows of the car.

It is believed that the person responsible for the theft left a pedal bike at the scene of the incident.

Inspector Andy Evans said: “The cold weather brings about extra opportunities for crime.

“Criminals have easy pickings as people in a rush to get on with their day leave vehicles unattended whilst they clear ice from windows in the mornings. But taking simple measures like giving themselves extra time to clear any ice means people are less likely to leave vehicles unattended, which will help protect their property.”

Anyone who may have noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area, especially if anyone who was riding a bike during the early hours, is urged to contact Merthyr Police Station on 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
