Cardiff Bay Barrage undergoes scheduled maintenance on an annual basis. Some maintenance will require heavy equipment to move around the site resulting in a temporary closure.
One of the three Cardiff Bay Barrage Locks is taken out of service every year in order to carry out scheduled maintenance and improvements. In order to carry out this maintenance it is necessary to install stop beams into the lock to keep the lock dry for the entire maintenance period. This year the stop beam installation will be in Lock Three and will require a 120 ton crane to be on site, in order to transport to move the beams from storage to site.
It is necessary for health and safety reasons to temporarily close the site to the public.
This will mean the Penarth end will not be accessible for drivers, pedestrians or cyclists from 7am on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th October until 6pm. Vessels can still access the Bristol Channel using the other two locks.
Pedestrians and cyclists are able to use the safe alternative route along Pont y Werin, just five minutes up the River Ely. This can be accessed from International Sports Village, Watkiss Way, Cardiff and from the top of Marconi Avenue, Penarth.
The re-opening is subject to all works being complete. Users are advised to check on site notices and cardiffharbour.com should there be any change to this.
