Cardiff community come to victim’s rescue

Police have praised the actions of a Cardiff community who detained a teenager suspected of robbing an elderly lady.

An 80-year-old woman had her handbag stolen incident in Merthyr Road, Whitchurch village on Sunday afternoon

A group of men gave chase to the suspect into Church Road and Penlline Road following the incident at around 3.30pm and held him until officers arrived.

The woman’s handbag was recovered and returned.

Inspector Nigel Brock said: “I wish to convey my thanks to the group of people who came to the lady’s assistance and pursued the suspect allowing us to make a swift arrest.

“Staff from the nearby bookmakers provided the victim with a cup of tea as she recovered from the incident which left her with cuts and bruises from the fall

“This kind of incident is rare in Whitchurch and will not be tolerated by neither South Wales Police nor the local community.”

A 17-year-old male from Whitchurch has been charged with robbery and is due to appear at Cardiff Youth Court on Thursday, February 10.
