Cardiff Council is working hard to ensure that the effects of the extreme winter weather being experienced across the UK are kept under control in Cardiff.
Regular gritting runs have taken place across the weekend throughout the city and all the main routes are currently clear.
Roads leading in and out of harder to reach areas, such as Pentytch and Creigiau, have also been gritted twice in the last 24 hours and the Council is planning two further full runs tonight.
Due to the ongoing snow and freezing temperatures motorists are being urged to keep all journeys to a minimum and the advice is to use public transport where possible.
In the city centre the main pedestrian routes continue to be gritted, including Queen Street and The Hayes. These have been made a priority and people are being urged to take extra care given the conditions.
The snow and ice is making things difficult for household bin collections which are currently suspended at this point in time. However commercial waste bags have been collected in the city centre and litter picking and bin operations are continuing.
The Council will continue to monitor the situation with collections beginning again as soon as it is safe to do so.
Cardiff Council is making sure that regular updates regarding the effects of the extreme weather are updated on its website at www.cardiff.gov.uk/winterweather
This will provide information relating to council services including gritting and waste collection as well as park and ride facilities, leisure centres, parks, cemeteries and schools.
Cardiff Council Leader Rodney Berman said: “The current extreme winter weather is causing disruption up and down the country. These are challenging conditions for all local authorities and Cardiff Council is no different. Staff are working extremely hard to ensure we can ease any disruption that is being caused and keep the city open for business. We are doing everything possible and remind people that they can also help by clearing pavements outside homes and businesses.
“Gritting our principle roads obviously remains a priority and I am pleased that we have managed to keep all the main routes throughout the city clear.
“While this spell of severe weather continues Cardiff Council will continue to closely monitor all our key services including those to the vulnerable and try to ensure that the city is best equipped to tackle the disruption.”
