Cardiff Council is working with the local community to help them say ‘no’ to cold callers. The Hollybush Estate in Whitchurch is the latest area to be designated a no cold calling zone.
Experience shows that ‘cold calling’ by individuals or businesses can lead to problems for residents, whether it is simply an annoyance; being put under pressure to buy goods or services; financial loss through buying sub standard services or increasing concerns that illegal money lenders may be targeting vulnerable people touting for business.
In the latest crackdown, the residents of the Hollybush Estate in Whitchurch were greeted by Cllr Lynda Thorne and local Councillors to receive advice on the scheme and given leaflets and stickers to show their support that ‘cold callers’ will no longer be tolerated in this area.
Cllr Lynda Thorne, Cabinet Member for Community, Neighbourhood Regeneration and Social Justice, said:
“It is important for residents to empower themselves with information, so they feel safe in their home and know their rights, so when unscrupulous rogue traders try to take advantage, they are fully informed and can take appropriate action. The signs that have been put in the area should send a clear message that cold calling isn’t wanted in this area.
“Residents just need to politely say no and close the door to those offering their services from the doorstep. Often those who are targeted are elderly or vulnerable, so it is very important that we get the message out to these individuals so they do not get duped by these people. Under current arrangements if residents have a problem with a doorstep trader, they are able to call the rapid response hotline on 0845 6012600 and officers will visit as soon as possible.”
The Councillors spent the day in the area, talking through the scheme with residents, giving them contact details so the Council can take prompt action if the situation arises.
Local Councillor for Whitchurch, Jonathan Evans said:
“Through the consultation carried out in this area, it was clear that the vast majority of those who responded wanted this scheme.
“All the Local Councillors received a few jokes that there was a certain irony about elected members visiting residents’ properties, but everyone understood what we were doing, why we were there and we received positive feedback. I hope that the scheme does make a difference to people’s lives.”
Cold Calling Zones are now in place in parts of Canton; Heath; Rhiwbina; Leckwith; St Mellons; Gabalfa; Llanrumney; Whitchurch; Panylan; Cathays and Plasnewydd.
