A public consultation seeking the views of the community on the future provision of council services in Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn will take place next week.
A series of drop-in sessions will be held in the community where people will have the chance to find out more about the proposal to provide sustainable services and buildings in Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn through the extended use of The Powerhouse and Pentwyn Leisure Centre, and the sale of The Dome.
The Council has been exploring ways of providing services in a more joined up way that makes them more accessible, convenient and easier for customers to engage, contributing to the Cabinet’s key commitment to work smarter and better.
The proposals for Pentwyn would help the Council achieve savings by reducing buildings and sharing costs while also increasing the range of local services and making them easier to access.
The sessions will give interested parties the chance to ask questions about the plans and fill in a survey about which services they would like to see and would use in the area. The surveys are also available online at www.surveys.cardiff.gov.uk/Pentwyn from Monday March 10. All surveys should be submitted by Monday, April 7.
The drop in sessions will take place on:
Monday, March 10, 9.30am -12.30pm, The Powerhouse
Thursday, March 13, 1pm – 3pm, The Powerhouse
Monday, March 17, 12.30pm – 2.30pm, The Powerhouse
Tuesday, March 11, 5pm – 7pm, Pentwyn Leisure Centre
Wednesday, March 19, 8am – 11am, Pentwyn Leisure Centre
Saturday, March 22, 10am -12pm, Pentwyn Leisure Centre
Wednesday, March 12, 12.30pm – 2.30pm, The Dome
Thursday, March 20, 9.30am – 12.30pm, The Dome
The Powerhouse, which is a large building and at the heart of the community, will be refurbished and provide a major centre for learning and youth services in the area. An extension to the building is already planned to allow Flying Start to provide child care services from the building.
Essential maintenance at Pentwyn Leisure Centre will be carried out and there are opportunities to extend the use of the building to include Adult Learning provision.
A new community Hub is also planned in the area as part of the future Maelfa redevelopment scheme. It is proposed that this will include housing, benefit and “into work” advice, a library service, access to the internet and training opportunities. Services may also be provided by other organisations such as Citizen Advice Bureau and Want to Work.
The Dome is the least used of these three Council buildings in the area and so the proposal is to sell this building and use the fund to refurbishishment of the Powerhouse and Leisure Centre.
Cabinet Member for Community and Neighbourhood Regeneration and Social Justice, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “With so many pressures on our finances, caused by reduced funding and increased demand for our services, it is more important than ever that the Council makes the best use of its resources and spends its money in a way that meets the needs of our customers. We need to focus our resources on vital services rather than on buildings.
“This consultation is an opportunity for people in this area of the city to have an input into future service provision, telling us which services they would like to see there. These views will help us shape local services for our customers.”
