Responding to the news that Councillor Heather Joyce will stand down as Leader of Cardiff Council, Councillor Bob Wellington (Torfaen), WLGA Leader said:
“The WLGA notes the decision today of Councillor Heather Joyce to stand down as Leader of Cardiff Council once a replacement has been elected. We are very grateful for the enormous role she has played both within Cardiff and at a wider national level over the past two years. Councillor Joyce leaves the leadership of the city with firm foundations in place for further progress, and with the full respect of her colleagues across Wales. She has been a Leader who has engaged well beyond the boundaries of the Capital, and has always been prepared to work with her colleagues to support the wider family of local government. She will be sorely missed and we wish her all the best for the future.”
Councillor Ali Thomas OBE (Neath Port Talbot), Deputy Leader of the WLGA added:
“Councillor Joyce has led the Capital city in the most difficult era faced by local government in decades. The leadership of any council is never an easy task and her period at the helm has been especially challenging because of the massive changes we face. It is to her considerable credit that she has managed to steer Cardiff through this and to yesterday conclude a budget which has been the most difficult in Cardiff’s recent history.
“This has required the council to take out nearly £50m from its revenues. Leaders across Wales, of all political persuasions, consider Heather Joyce a good friend and colleague. We wish to place on record our genuine thanks for all the work she has done both within Cardiff and the WLGA.”
