Cardiff Council is a finalist competing for a national award at the Social Care Accolades 2011.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Cardiff City Hall on Thursday, June 23.
The Social Care Accolades recognise and celebrate good practice in the social care sector across the whole of Wales. The biennial awards are given to teams, organisations and partnerships which have demonstrated improved social care services by investing in the learning and development of people.
Cardiff Council has been nominated for a project that aims to improve the recruitment and retention of social workers for its Children’s Services workforce. Recruitment and retention of social workers has received considerable professional, political and media attention in recent years as it has presented challenges both locally and nationally. The project consists of a range of coordinated actions to improve recruitment and retention of social workers for this complex area of work. It offers support to newly qualified social workers through a training and development package that includes individual mentoring, coaching, and learning support groups. Feedback from social workers and their managers has confirmed that they have viewed this approach positively.
Cllr Kirsty Davies, Executive Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing, said: “I would like to congratulate the Children’s Services team in reaching the final of these awards which celebrate excellent practice. This is a tribute to the hard work put in by the team to address the very real challenges faced in delivering high-quality social care services.
“It’s important to acknowledge how good practice can be shared with others to improve services for individuals, families and communities across Wales.”
