Dog owners in and around Cardiff are invited to take advantage of a special health offer for their pets between the 25 – 27 October.
Cardiff Council Dogs Home in partnership with the Dog’s Trust is encouraging responsible dog ownership and is offering to neuter and micro-chip pets for £10, providing people come along to Cardiff Dogs Home on Westpoint Industrial Estate, Penarth Road to sign up to the scheme during this three day event (you do not need to bring your dog along at this stage).
Vets at the Cardiff Dogs home will be working with the Dogs Trust, which runs a re-homing centre in Bridgend, to offer dog owners who are in receipt of means tested benefits including tax credits, the chance to take advantage of reduced cost neutering for their dog and a microchip at the Dogs Home or a local participating vet, for just £10. This is a saving of over £100 and only available if you register on the following days:
- Tuesday 25th October – from 10am -4pm
- Wednesday 26th October – from 1pm -7pm
- Thursday 27th October – from 10am -4pm
There are also special offers for neutering and micro chipping dogs belonging to owners who are not in receipt of means tested benefit. Unneutered male and female dogs are prone to various life threatening conditions that could have been prevented if they had been neutered.
The healthy dog offer follows the recent publication of the Dogs Trust Stray Dog Survey, which showed that across Wales there was a 1% increase number of stray dogs destroyed by local authorities from 481 dogs in 2010 to 486 dogs in 2011. However, overall the number of stray dogs collected in the region has decreased by 2% from 9,632 in 2010 to 9,482 in 2011. The Dogs Trust campaigns team in Wales works hard to help reduce the number of stray dogs that end up in rescue shelters and council pounds every day.
Executive Member for Environment, Margaret Jones said: “Cardiff Dogs Home provides a high quality service in tackling the issue of stray dogs in Cardiff and is committed to animal welfare in general. With over 50 dogs currently housed at the Dogs Home, we want to encourage responsible dog ownership. Taking up this special offer of having your pet neutered and micro-chipped is a good opportunity to secure your dog’s safety and improve its health.”
Sian Edwards, Dogs Trust campaign manager for Wales said: “We would like to urge eligible dog owners to take advantage of this limited health check offer. While we have seen a slight decrease in the number of stray dogs in Wales, we still have a long way to go.
“Any dog destroyed for want of a home is one dog too many and we are working very closely with the Local Authorities who do their best in a very difficult economic climate. They do not want to put dogs to sleep but they are struggling to cope with such huge numbers of strays and a changing attitude to dog ownership. By using this limited offer and getting your dog neutered, as well as the health benefits for your dog, it will help prevent your pet wandering off and getting impounded.”
